Alberta Supernet

An initiative by the Government of Alberta to establish an open, high-speed, fiber-based network connection between every community and public-sector facility in Alberta (hospitals, libraries, government facilities, schools)

There were Two Project Scopes, including:

1. 1. Base Build (Base Area Network)
   2. Extended Area Network (EAN). The Extended Area Network connected about 400 rural communities, while the Base Area Network connected approximately eight larger urban areas such as Edmonton to Fort McMurray.

The Government of Alberta awarded Bell Canada the BAN portion of the build and Axia SuperNet the EAN portion. Bell Canada decided to tender the fiber optic cable installation between the major centers to various contractors through an EF&I (engineer, furnish and install) build. At the same time, Axia broke the province into nine (9) district zones and awarded the fiber optic cable installation between various municipalities within each zone to a different contractor.

PCI Supply provided the OSP materials for both the EAN portion of the SuperNet build and the BAN portion.

PCI Supply also offered a crucial solution to streamline the ordering process by developing a web-based portal through which each contractor ordered their materials. This portal also gave access to the three arms overseeing the project (The Alberta Government, Bell Canada and Axia) to view which materials were being installed and their location.

The PCI Supply Management team took the initiative of developing an Installation Manual that outlined the various procedures related to the project. Once approved by the three entities involved, the Manual served as a reference for standardizing every aspect of the installations. Contractors were required to sign off on the conditions outlined in the Manual before commencing any work.
